 'One' Theme for Everyone

First cake!

Did the party have a theme?

For a first birthday, the theme is usually just "One." Everything is usually a color theme with the number or word.

Tell us about the party.

For the first birthday we usually go all out. There is a lot to celebrate in that first year! We might have a nice food spread, a jumpy in the back yard for older kids. This is a family affair - not just for kids. So we also have just spaces for adults to come and talk and hang out. We'll have the traditional hats and maybe a few mylar balloons but not a ton of decorations.

Lessons Learned

  • We cover the floor under the birthday child with the plastic table cloth. This way, you can sit the baby right on the table cloth in a diaper and hat and let them get really messy with the cake. Easy clean up!
  • Don't give out toys to other kids that present choking hazards for the birthday boy or girl.
  • Don't expect people to sit and watch birth videos or hours of footage of baby's first.
  • A video invitation with the "firsts" works nicely to cover those basic milestones.

Megan Cooley, Kids' Parties & Celebrations Guide, says:

Thanks for those great tips, Robin! I love that idea to send out a video invitation of the baby's big moments. By the way, readers, Robin is the mother of eight, so she's definitely a pro at throwing first birthday parties.
