I'm one of those people who always come up an awesome homemade costume idea - on the day after Halloween. By the time the following Halloween comes, I either can't remember what I'd thought of, or the costume somehow seems less awesome than it did a year ago.
My kids, however, seem to have a different problem. They have so many ideas, they take forever to settle on just one. And when they finally do, it's often too late to find said costume in the stores. So we usually find ourselves in need of last minute costume ideas.
My favorite solution usually involves taking advantage of the Christmas decorations that are already on the shelves. Last year, for instance, an antler headband and some jingle bell ribbon tied around her neck turned my daughter into one of Santa's reindeer. A Christmas tree is another fun idea; simply dress your child in green clothing and wrap some green garland around her. A couple of ornaments secured on with safety pins and a star glued to a headband complete this costume.
Sometimes, all you need is a hat to inspire a costume. A cowboy hat immediately tells the world that you're a cowboy or cowgirl, no matter what else you wear. But a plaid shirt, blue jeans and a bandana - all items you probably already have in the closet - complement the costume perfectly.
