It's official: Halloween is my favorite holiday. For most of my life, Christmas held this honor - I even loved shopping with the crowds. But then I had kids and everything changed.
Maybe it's because Halloween kicks off an entire season of excitement. Or maybe it's the awesomely cool costumes. Or the pumpkin parties, the candy apples and the scarecrows - heck, what's not to like about Halloween?
Those things are all part of it, but to be honest, the reason Halloween tops my list is a selfish one. I love that Halloween is a holiday we get to celebrate at home. Not that we mind traveling over the river and through the woods to celebrate Christmas with Grandma, but it's nice to have some traditions in our own home as well.
And as far as holiday parties go, it's hard to deny that Halloween is the coolest. From cute pumpkins to haunted houses, the options for party themes, decorations, fun foods and games are ample enough to allow for a whole new party every year. Last year we did vampires. This year we're going with a witch theme - complete with witches' hats, witch-themed party games and witch broom favors.
Of course, since Halloween is a theme all its own, we may just throw in a few werewolves, ghosts and skeletons. Because when the monsters are mashing the only thing that really matters is that they're all doing it together, celebrating as a family.
