A Summer Birthday with an Icicle Party Theme

Icicle cones are treats that can be used as deocrations, party food and favors.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the advantages of celebrating a birthday in summertime. I applauded the season's extra hours of daylight and availability of outdoor venues. What I didn't mention is the heat. Yes, a summer birthday party can be all of the wonderful things I described, but it can also be hot, hot, hot! I would know, having one child born at the end of June and another with a mid-July birthday. That doesn't mean we avoid the outdoors when their birthdays come around; it just means we look for ways to keep their parties cool and refreshing.

Which is why I became excited when a mom named Robin posted to the Kids Parties Facebook Page about her daughter's July birthday party. The theme her daughter has chosen? Icicles. And it's a pool party. Does it really get much cooler than that?

I'm a big fan of doing a seasonal theme when the theme is out of season. Much like a winter pool party, the summer icicle party appeals to my sense of creative adventure. So I was happy to provide some icicle party ideas when Robin asked for some thoughts on party food, icicle decorations and "catchy phrases" for the invites. I'm hoping you'll be happy to help, as well by sharing your ideas here.

Great ideas! Love do-it-yourself parties. They’re so much better and memorable than buying everything.
