Before we had kids, my husband and I loved poring over home-decor magazines and dreaming up elegant "tablescapes" for entertaining. I still like to live vicariously through magazines, but actually executing some of those ideas would feel a little silly now that our worlds revolve around a 5 and a 3 year old.
That doesn't mean we can't have fun decorating the table for holidays and birthdays, though! We just have to take a more kid-friendly approach.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, here are some ideas for "dressing" up the turkey table:
- Here's a shot of the kiddie table my sister and her daughters created last year for our family's Thanksgiving dinner, complete with foam pilgrim hats and coloring pages. Note the random "happy birthday" napkins. I can just imagine my youngest niece, who was 3 at the time, insisting that those go on the table.
- The kids also made place cards for everyone simply using construction paper, markers and stickers.
- I love the turkey slipcovers shown in my article about how to decorate the Thanksgiving table for kids. (Pictured above, too.) They were made by Mollie Johanson of the blog Wild Olive following instructions she'd seen in FamilyFun magazine.
- Speaking of FamilyFun, check out their ideas for Thanksgiving crafts, many of which would make great table decor, including these turkey napkin rings and leaf-printed harvest linens.
- Thanksgiving printables, such as coloring pages and puzzles, not only add a holiday-themed touch to the table--they also keep the little ones busy during dinner! Check out About.com's Guide to Family Craft's large collection of Thanksgiving printables.
- Hewlett-Packard offers some free Thanksgiving table printables on its website, too.
- Martha Stewart has a beautiful slideshow of Thanksgiving kids table ideas. I especially love the Mayflower centerpiece and finger-puppet favors.
- How cute is this kid-friendly Thanksgiving tablescape from Frog Prince Paperie? I love how her "tree of thanks" doubles as a decoration and a meaningful activity for the family.
- Cuteness overload with these DIY Thanksgiving tabletop ideas from Fiskars (yes, the company that made your kid's scissors).
